This Tuesday: A Very Special Hearthrob

Tomorrow night's very special event at Hearthrob is going to bring together many old and new heads. Optimo will headline in Middlesex's small capacity space, and it'll be legendary to say the least. Wilkes & Twitch are the two Scottish gentlemen that started Optimo (Espacio) at the Sub Club in Glasgow over 10 years ago, and hardly book DJs or people that they don't know. Highly selectively, the existence of Optimo as refers to an experience, not just the name of a club night, the DJ duo or a simple moniker.

You may remember the Diplo Pitchfork mix that completely blew up and was heard around the world, but Optimo's Essential Mix is a cake-taker. Enjoy, prepare, and explode.

Don't Forget: Best New Music Poll

About a month ago, we made the announcement that DJ Die Young had been selected to be named as one of the best DJs in Boston. He's also been in the Phoenix about three times in the last month or two, and is featured this week as MP3 of the week under a spotlight for his nomination. Peaking around the PHX's blog, On The Download, there was a great goodie bag of tracks from all of the DJs that are up for the award. Take a look and take your pick!

Matters & Dunaway: CD Release + 2 Very Special Remixes

Monday, March 24th
CD Release Show
MATTERS & DUNAWAY
w/ Plus Move,
Concord Ballet Orchestra Players
Middle East Upstairs
18+ / $8 / 9:30p

Matters & Dunaway is one of the most intriguing bands in Boston. Avid shoegaze fans that have a knack for pop, they've taken the many genres of drone and sped it up. Their music, as it grows with each release, is like its album art - fast, dream-like, and futuristic. Everyone is familiar with photography and film that has low enough shutter speeds to capture the chaos of a nighttime urban landscape in one shot.

Their newest record, Feel The Future, is the step beyond. Their artwork is splashes of yellow and pink, but the progressive songwriting remains intact. Live drums are paired with Tom Gallagher's programming alongside Andre Obin's bass and vocals. Basstown is a big fan of Obin, and recently featured him in the Local Voices column on the blog. This event on March 24th will be a special event to celebrate a new stepping stone on their ascent to musical excellence (it sounds hyperbolic, but you'll just have to take my word for it until you heard the new record).

"Boards of Canada-esque rocktronica, the laptop/bass duo's mostly-instrumental albums have inspired a small, rabid following among electronic music fans and DJs across the country." - Boston Phoenix

"Matters & Dunaway are up to their necks in electronica, but is avery good kind of electronica that brings to mind M83 at times." - PopMatters

"Matters and Dunaway truly distinguish themselves from the bulk of the electronic acts that have purists so squeamish, they are, through andthrough, a live band. And a very good one at that." - Weekly Dig

2. Resolution Now!

5. Dystopian Dream

Basstown On The Mad Decent Blog...Again!

DJ Die Young, who spun one hell of an afterparty in a random Somerville living room this past weekend.
5 hours straight, and yes...the light behind the window is dawn. Ooofa...

"The last time I put up a Basstown mix it got 160+ comments and made every crew in the city battle each other in an all-caps throwdown. It was funny because it was the first thing I ever posted without listening to it first. So I thought why not stoke the fire some more and give you another mix by the same crew (this time not minimal and with some boston content) that i haven’t listened to either..." - Paul Devro, Mad Decent

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Basstown + Diplo. Together Forever.

It's been over a week. Actually, it's been two weeks, and because we've all been so busy and stressed, there is a very important track we've been meaning to post. Diplo's set at Great Scott was epic, and the best is actually when you hear him say something to the effect of "Great Scott...man this place is tiny! But I'm going to play here every time I come through Boston." Today this is going up, and so help me god if our server crashes (because this is 154MB, yikes!) I will have to take this down, chop it in half, and put it back up via zShare.

All in all, the event went incredibly well (and for those of us that didn't know how talented DJ Sega is..holy shit! He is the Philly version of Etan, for sure...young, talented, and incredibly nice.), and even a bunch of online drama can't bring us down. Things like that are bound to happen from time to time, but we're just glad that we have the friendships we do, and that people enjoy themselves at our parties.

Anyway, enjoy!

Steadycam: In The Moog For Love

March 11th marks the release of Get Physical's stellar mix, Body Language, and this sixth volume was done by Domino Records' Junior Boys, whose "In The Morning" was loved all throughout last year, in addition to their great live DJ sets. It's an excellent, accessible mix, and the tracklist is as follows:

01 Sorcerer: "Surfing at Midnight (Prins Thomas Miks)"
02 Supermayer: "Saturndays"
03 Chelonius R. Jones: "Deer in the Headlights (DJ Hell Remix)"
04 Love Nine: "Feedback"
05 Kreon & Lemos: "Fola [ft. Feeboy]"
06 Kelley Polar: "Rosenband (Magic Tim's Instrumental Version)"
07 Steadycam: "In the Moog for Love"
08 Radio Slave: "Screaming Hands (Cosmo Vitelli Radioaktivitat Remix)"
09 Studio: "Life's a Beach! (Todd Terje Beach House Mix)"
10 Gui.tar: "Love Started to Shine"
11 Stereo Image: "Dark Chapter"
12 Matthew Dear: "You Know What I Would Do"
13 Pushé: "Don't Take Your Love Away"
14 Visage: "I'm Still Searching"
15 Junior Boys: "No Kinda Man"
16 Rework: "Love Love Love Yeah (Chloé Remix)"
17 f0st3r: "bl3w r0d30 d3m0"
18 Chloé: "Be Kind to Me"
19 Bill Nelson: "When Your Dream of Perfect Beauty Comes True"

The Steadycam track - who first floored me with "Knock-Kneed" a bit ago - is an absolute favorite, and we've taken it from the center of the mix and put it here for a taste of the incredible edition of Body Language.

Coralcola is Hypnotizing

I love when amazing people send us amazing music. Coralcola from Worcester, MA is one of these people. I am not sure originally how we ended up with his Heath Ledger track, but this Field inspired joint impressed the hell out of all of us. His more subdued remix of Crystal Castles is also included here. This track builds and rides the 4x4 rhythm very sweetly until the very end where the sample gets mashed up, worked over and distorted. Someone's good with their plug-ins...

Coralcola also wanted me to tell you he has an EP coming out and some remixes on the horizon. Let's be on the lookout for this, ya?
